Macquarie University Rural Bonus Scheme
Special Entry Schemes: Posted 24-8-10 Deadline - No Deadline
Macquarie University Rural Bonus Scheme
Macquarie University is committed to ensuring students have access to an outstanding educational experience and that their continuing education is not negatively impacted by social, financial or geographic disadvantage. As part of the University's social inclusion agenda, Macquarie is enhancing the Macquarie Lighthouse program, under the Education Access Scheme, by introducing an additional and complementary Rural Bonus Scheme (RBS).

The Macquarie University RBS will support students from rural and regional Australia by offering applicants bonus points, added to their ranking that determines an offer for a degree course. The Scheme is intended to support students whose primary residence has prevented them from accessing resources and support networks that are more readily available within the metropolitan regions.

How does it work?
The Macquarie University RBS has been developed from and informed by the Accessibility / Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA+). The ARIA+ is based on road distances to the perimeter of service centres. Depending on the remoteness of an applicant's primary residential home they will receive either five, seven or nine bonus points that can be used toward any Macquarie University degree.

Macquarie - Uni in a Day
Open Day/Info Session: Posted 18-8-10 Deadline - No Deadline
Macquarie - Uni in a Day

Transitioning from high school to university is a big jump. Not only do you have to negotiate a campus the size of a small suburb, but you also have to make new friends, get used to a new format of study and figure out what it means to be a 'uni student'. On top of that universities love to throw all kinds of new terms at you. What exactly is an undergraduate, a credit point, a program of study and what do you mean I have to go to a lecture AND a tutorial? What's the difference, aren't they all classes?

On top of that, you actually have to pick which classes you want to study. Sure, universities have the usual suspects – biology, chemistry, maths, english, computer science, and commerce – but then there are 'new' names to get used to. What exactly is mechatronics? Or actuarial studies? Or planning? What do I study when I study linguistics? And really, what is the difference between philosophy/ anthropology/cultural studies/sociology?

If you want to become more acquainted with the who, the what and the how of university study then Macquarie University's "Uni in a Day" is the event for you. Get a taste of university life – choose your own subjects, plan your timetable and get social on campus living a day in the life of a university student.

Students studying some of their HSC by distance are eligible to apply for ‘Educational Access Schemes’ (EAS) through UAC.
If you have a student studying a TVET course through OTEN they are eligible to apply. Applications need to be submitted by Sept 30.

The application and information are at http://www.uac.edu.au/documents/undergraduate/eas-booklet-2011.pdf

New Veterinary Science Program at CSU

The new veterinary science program at Charles Sturt University (CSU) has received resounding praise for its staff, students and facilities as the course received full accreditation in Australia and New Zealand. In its final report on the Bachelor of Veterinary Science program, the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council Inc. (AVBC) found the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at CSU in Wagga Wagga ‘will produce outstanding veterinary graduates, selected and trained for roles in rural Australia‘. The regulatory body found the ‘six-year program, problem-based curriculum and strong focus on production animals are unique and important features of the degree’.

The program boasts purpose-built facilities such as the Veterinary Clinic Centre (2008), Veterinary Diagnostic Centre (2009) and the Kay Hull Veterinary Teaching Hospital (2010), and the AVBC found, ‘The facilities that have been built to support student learning are exceptional’.

"We couldn’t be more delighted with this report and the final accreditation of the veterinary science program," Head of the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences Professor Kym Abbott said. "Our mission to provide highly competent veterinary graduates for Australia is truly underway."
